• CANTER Ohio CANTER Ohio has helped more than 765 race horses transition into new careers and provided foster care for over 220 horses since 2001. Through its Web site, CANTER provides the means for the public to view what horses are ending their racing careers and are available for purchase or adoption at Thoroughbred racetracks in six states. Rescue and Sanctuary is a charitable, tax-exempt Humane Corporation based in Wyoming County, N.Y.; about forty miles southwest of Rochester. The Rescue was incorporated on May 16, 1996, in order to prevent cruelty to equines of all breeds and ages. In the beginning, the League accepted donations of equines. Now, having established a respectable reputation within the equine community, USERL shelters equines that have been seized by law enforcement authorities and those surrendered by neglectful and/or abusive owners. Each year thousands of unwanted horses (many young & healthy; many abused & neglected) are bought at public auction for slaughter. The horse meat is then sent overseas for human consumption.
