  Collie Breed Standard
The Collie is a lithe, strong, responsive, active dog, carrying no useless timber, standing naturally straight and firm. The deep, moderately wide chest shows strength, the sloping shoulders and well-bent hocks indicate speed and grace, and the face shows high intelligence.

  Collie Dog - Breed Information
The Collie, as a breed, had its roots in Scotland. The name is said to come from the Scottish word "Colleys," which referred to the dark sheep which were native to the region. The Anglo-Saxon word "Col," means "black." The Colley dog was the immediate ancestor of the Collie as we know it today. The breed was introduced to America in the late 1800's.
