It is a direct ancestor of the Airedale Terrier. He wanted the ideal working terrier to dig out badgers and fox and to accompany his Otterhounds on the hunt. The breed is named after his family estate. The Sealyham Terrier was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1919.
